Calving glaciers, whales right under your balcony and snuggling with sled dogs?
There are so many incredible memories to be made on an Alaskan cruise! We absolutely think cruising, or a land-and-cruise package, is the perfect way to visit Alaska for the first time.
But one thing that is important to keep in mind is timing. When it comes to Alaska, we recommend booking at least one year in advance to get the cabin, itinerary, and dates you want. Here are just a few reasons why this special trip requires some extra-special planning.
Shorter season
While cruises to tropical destinations such as the Caribbean or Mexican Riviera run year-round, Alaska’s cruising season is limited from late May to early September, with high season peaking June through August. Admittedly, you probably wouldn’t want to go in the winter, as it is really, REALLY cold! The shortened season means there is far less supply than there are for tropical itineraries.
Smaller and fewer ships
Because Alaska is so specialized, cruise lines often only have one or two ships sailing in the area, versus the dozens you may see in the Caribbean. So with that issue alone, there are just fewer voyages. Are you sensing a theme here?
On top of the question of the number of ships sailing those itineraries, the issue is compounded by the size of the ships. Many of the most interesting and desirable spots in Alaska just can’t accommodate the giant mega ships that many cruise lines are now using for other itineraries. Incredibly scenic places such as Glacier Bay are simply too delicate to risk a giant ship, and require the smaller and more maneuverable ships to be seen.
These two factors mean it can sometimes be tough to get the cabin you want for your cruise, simply because there just aren’t as many to go around! Booking early is the best way to assure you get the room you want, that goes to the places you want to see, on dates that work for you.
Exclusive excursions
The ships and the season aren’t the only things that are smaller in U.S.’s largest state, the excursion groups also fall into this category. The delicate ecosystem limits some excursions, while others have logistical issues. It’s just impossible to helicopter more than a few dozen guests onto a glacier within the few hours a ship is in port, for example. So if your heart is set on a specific experience, let us know, and we can help you find an itinerary where it is offered. It’s best to book your must-do excursions as far in advance as possible to guarantee availability.
