Do you get travel FOMO (fear of missing out)? You’re not alone. Who hasn’t looked at a friend, peer, or even an influencer’s travel pictures on social media and wished they could go there, too? We all have! A recent Forbes Advisor survey investigated just how much we are affected by travel-related content on social media in a recent survey. Here are a few of the results:
- 48% of the survey participants admitted that they specifically traveled to a destination because they saw it on social media.
- 82% of Gen Z survey participants admitted they went somewhere because they saw it on social media, compared to 57% of millennials.
- Half of the people surveyed admitted they often or always feel pressured to emulate the travel experiences they see on social media.
The travel FOMO effect is real
While this survey data isn’t conclusive, it’s pretty telling. We all feel a little travel FOMO when we see our friends and acquaintances experiencing new places and experiences. But as Travel Advisors, we know that booking a trip to justify your FOMO wouldn’t be the best travel experience. You have to learn what your own travel style and preferences are to really enjoy your travel experiences, otherwise you may end up disappointed when a trip doesn’t live up to your expectations.
Embrace off-season travel
One of the easiest ways to figure out your travel style and preferences is by booking a trip out of season. Plenty of the top tourist destinations that look so good on social media can feel a little unfulfilling when you get there, and they are packed with tourists. But when you travel during less busy times, like during the winter months, you can find hidden gems without fighting through the crowds.
Book big trips early
Another way you can fight off your travel FOMO feelings, especially during the summer months, when everyone posts vacation pictures, is by booking your next big trip. You usually get better deals when you book a big trip six months or a year in advance. Booking this far in advance also gives you time to research your destination and learn more about the area and culture, so you have something to look forward to.
Travel is incredibly special, and the best trips are those you curate based on your interests and passions, not just what others are doing. So don’t give into your travel FOMO feelings, or you may have a lackluster vacation. Instead, let us help you book a magical trip that fits who you are and what you find special.
