If there’s one thing you can do to make your Disney travel experience more pleasant, it’s preparing your body for all the walking. The truth is, you’re going to put on a lot of extra steps when you take a Disney trip. Some estimates put the average Walt Disney World guest at between six and 10 miles a day! That’s a lot of walking, and if you’re not in shape, it can make your trip uncomfortable.
So, what can you do to prepare your body for all the walking you’ll do? Here are a few ideas we recommend.
- Start a daily walking routine: The best way to prepare for all the extra steps you will take is to start a daily walking workout a few months before your trip. According to Healthline, the best way to build up to 10 miles of walking daily is to start with a daily 1-mile walk. If you can get that mile down to 15-20 minutes, add another mile each week until you can comfortably tolerate 10 miles!
- Find the right walking shoes. If you’re a fan of the sitcom Modern Family, you may remember a memorable episode where the family takes a trip to Disneyland. One character, Gloria, decides to wear high heels to complete her fashionable ensemble, a decision she regrets. However, she refuses to admit to her husband, Jay, that the shoes are hurting her out of pride, so he helps her by buying her some giant Goofy slippers to help her aching feet. As you can see from this hilarious exchange, the right shoes make all the difference, so make sure to find a comfortable pair and break them in before your trip.
- Check the size of your stroller. If you are traveling with young children and need to bring a stroller, make sure you know how big it is. All Disney resorts have a strict stroller policy that they must be 31” (79cm) wide and 52” (132cm) long or smaller. Wagon strollers are also not permitted. If your stroller doesn’t fit those measurements, plan to rent one to use. Make sure you’re comfortable pushing your stroller with your child in it for all your walking.
